Valve clearance gets smaller/tighter and of course quieter. Here's a photo of some beemer heads I fitted some new valve seats into as they were worn out allowing the valves to sink into the head( pocketing)Īgain this causes the clearances to close up,the first indicator is poor cold start I've been doing this for 35 years so I have a pretty fair idea what I'm talking about (thumbs) This is why valve clearances are so often neglected, they don't get noisy like an old ohv engine(think rattling old fiesta) Sorry fella ,in the case of modern ohc engines you are incorrect. Wrong way round, as the valves wear the clearance increases, which is why they rattle ! ![]() Why/if valve clearances are so critical in relation to starting? Feel as though I'mmissing something.f Thick shims are a good sign your valves are OK. Otherwise the cam will contact the bucket, hence re valving the engine. There is a 'minimum' shim you can go to on a bucket and shim set up. No problem when engine is at operating temp tho.Īs the valve decreases, the clearance also decreases. They sink into the head, effecting fueling etc. I'm currently changing the inlets on my Daytona, due to 'soft' valves! It may only happen when the engine is cold as when hot everything expands and a slight clearance may be regained ,increasing the compression and normal starting is resumed. This reduces the clearances ,if the clearance is reduced to nothing the valve is held open slightly, this reduces the compression of the engine and in turn it will be hard to start. In most cases as the valve seat and valve head wear they start to pocket into the head, Why/if valve clearances are so critical in relation to starting? Feel as though I'mmissing something. In my limited experience both of the above are relatively uncommon so can someone explain Willywombat64 wrote:often seen or been told that poor starting can be caused by out of spec valve clearances but never understood why unless :ġ/ they are so tight that a leak occurs at compression.Ģ/ they are so loose that the lift is compromised thereby reducing intake / exhaust duration
